PLEASE NOTE THIS EVENT HAS ALREADY TAKEN PLACE.
Cycling is all about working as a team or ‘Peloton’ to finish the ride. For this exciting project a team of artists, archaeologists, event organisers, scientists and filmmakers will invite the public to join the Sheffield Steel Peloton and explore the process of making a bicycle, complete with a specially designed bicycle head badge made from iron mined and forged into steel in Sheffield. Follow this fascinating process from its beginnings deep underground to the creation of a unique bicycle and film to celebrate Le Tour arriving in Yorkshire this summer.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
Teamwork is essential if you’re going to have a chance of winning Le Tour. With this in mind, you’re invited to join the Sheffield Steel Peloton - a hands-on adventure with a specific goal in mind - to explore the process of making a bicycle, complete with a specially designed bicycle head badge made from iron mined and forged into steel in Sheffield. Join in at workshops that anyone can take part in, ranging from iron smelting and blacksmithing, to bike décor and the science of cycling – as the Peloton works together to create a one-off steel bicycle in time for the Grand Depart.
The project will be filmed for a documentary to be screened in public locations later this summer that will chart the adventures of the Sheffield Steel Peloton as they gain first-hand experience of exactly what the people of South Yorkshire’s steel city are made of.
