A Hawk and a Hacksaw at Hebden Bridge Arts Festival

Ballads and instrumentals featuring trademark accordion and violin.

Music Event

Ballads and instrumentals featuring trademark accordion and violin.

For the last 15 years A Hawk and A Hacksaw, a band from New Mexico, have immersed themselves deeply in the musical traditions of Eastern Europe, Russia and Turkey, resulting in a sound full of colour, grandeur and gut-wrenching romance. The richness of dance numbers featuring accordion and violin, contrasts with eerie and finely balanced ballads and dulcimerladen instrumentals. Accordionist and drummer Jeremy Barnes, who has spent the last two years touring with indie rock legends Neutral Milk Hotel, and violinist Heather Trost come back together in 2016 with new material and tracks from their back-catalogue ahead of a new album.

“So ebullient and full of character that by the time it’s over you feel like you’ve caught a glimpse of the type of joyful festivity that always feels most rewarding after a long journey.” - Pitchfork

A bit more information...

Opera North is England’s national opera company in the North and one of Europe’s leading arts organisations. The Company is committed to producing work of the highest quality that excites, challenges and entertains. It tours not only throughout the North of England and to London, but also to opera houses on the continent in cities such as Prague and Barcelona, and it performs at major international festivals including Edinburgh and Ravenna.
Opera North is a vibrant, lively organisation which actively challenges conventional perceptions of opera. Breathing new life into the classics, the Company is also a strong advocate of lesser-known works and a champion of musical theatre.
Opera North collaborates with artists and companies working in a variety of media, including film and visual art. Its versatile Chorus and Orchestra also perform independently, constantly revitalising their approaches to music-making.
Creativity and the development of individual skills is important throughout the Company from performers to the highly talented team of technical, production and management staff. Education is a vital part of the work of the Company. Opera North Education is one of the leading arts education departments in the country. The team delivers a range of workshops and creative projects, encouraging young people and communities to explore the art form of opera. Opera North is proud of its northern roots and provides a valuable resource for the cultural life of the region and for the development of young talent.
The work of Opera North is made possible by direct support from Arts Council England, local authorities led by a close and sustained relationship with Leeds City Council, sponsorship from the private sector, the Friends of Opera North, the Opera North Fund and the box office income from its audiences. The Company is grateful to the many business sponsors, charitable trusts and individuals who together assist Opera North to continue to mount its award-winning programmes.
